Subject: [CPEO-BIF] EPA questions Scottsdale baseball complex

New ball field could hamper water cleanup

SCOTTSDALE - Federal regulators are concerned that building a baseball complex east of Scottsdale Stadium could interfere with environmental cleanup efforts.

The 10 acres of city-owned land northeast of 75th Street and Osborn Road is under consideration for an $18 million training facility for the San Francisco Giants.

Matt Jefferson, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency project manager, said the agency needs more details about the baseball complex to determine if it would hinder the cleanup project.

The city's site is within a federal Superfund cleanup project that involves soil and groundwater tainted with an industrial solvent called trichloroethylene, or TCE.

Steve Owens, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality director, said he does not see a problem with building the baseball complex on the site other than relocating a well used to monitor groundwater contamination.
