Statewide probe underway into contamination threat

State environmental officials are preparing to examine hundreds of sites
across the state for possible contamination spread.

Outside the abandoned Powerex plant, a GE facility in Auburn, are a
number of monitoring wells. Officials suspect this facility may be
responsible for an underground plume of pollution that extends five
miles.  But now the state Department of Environmental Conservation may
return to take another hard look because of new information about one of
the chemicals detected there.

The chemical, Trichloroethylene, or TCE, is the same chemical they're
drilling for this week in a neighborhood in Ithaca.  TCE is a common
industrial solvent that has polluted sites throughout the state.  But
the DEC is taking TCE a lot more seriously.

Contacted by phone, Regional Director Ken Lynch confirms there is a
"statewide effort to revisit these sites," and calls it an "issue of importance."

Until now, TCE was known to mainly threaten underground water supplies.
Now, new research shows it also vaporizes and can enter homes above
ground where it poses a significant health threat. If vapors get into
the air, depending on the volume, breathing TCE can cause
headaches, dizziness, liver damage, heart malfunction and in extreme
cases, even death.
