"The federal government estimates that there are between 250,000 and
600,000 brownfields properties in the U.S., most located in economically
distressed areas."

as a General Accounting Office Report from 1987, but they have not been
confirmed.  See also report of teh National Environmental Policy Institute,
n.d. States vary in their definitions and the way they count brownfields.
However, newspaper articles in the Washington Post and elsewhere over the
past two years consistently use these figures." [footnote 2, p 9]
